O clube Villas Vikings ‘importou’ este invulgar desporto para o nosso país e tem-no promovido junto de dezenas de jovens da regiãoA equipa vila-condense tem um campo próprio onde joga semanalmente
Home runs, strikes ou pitchers são apenas alguns dos termos do léxico do basebol que se podem ouvir na Arena dos Villas Vikings, mesmo atrás do Estádio do Rio Ave, em Vila do Conde, naquela que é a casa do mais emblemático clube desta emergente modalidade no Norte do País.
Apaixonados pelos desportos norte-americanos, os responsáveis dos Vikings “importaram” o jogo para a cidade do foz do Ave em 2004, tendo neste período chamado a atenção de algumas dezenas de atletas – seniores e juvenis – que uma ou duas vezes por semana se trajam a rigor para praticar uma modalidade que, um pouco por todo o País, tem vindo a ganhar adeptos.
À frente da estrutura dos Villas Vikings está Hugo Almeida, o principal impulsionador do projecto, que tenta gerir com profissionalismo o clube amador e sem grandes fontes de receita. A Câmara Municipal vila–condense é, por isso, o parceiro principal nesta aventura dos Vikings, tendo providenciado um terreno, e a requalificação do mesmo, para instalar o campo de jogo – Arena – e comparticipando nas despesas de deslocação da equipa.
“Não é fácil promover este desporto, que em Portugal tem pouco mediatismo. Ainda assim, localmente, já somos bastante conhecidos e temos conseguido cativar alguns jovens para o basebol”, explicou Hugo Almeida ao DN sport, sublinhando as acções de divulgação que têm sido desenvolvidas pelo clube: “Fazemos exibições na escolas e em colónias de férias que têm tido grande sucesso entre os mais jovens. Depois de experimentarem, adoram a envolvência que o jogo proporciona.”
Uma das “batalhas” que o responsável pelos Villas Vikings trava é o desmistificar de que o basebol é um desporto apenas praticado no continente americano, e, por isso, sem margem de progressão para os atletas. “É uma modalidade olímpica, que para tal tem de ser praticada, de forma organizada, em três continentes e 75 países. Noutros países da Europa, por exemplo, em Espanha, já se pratica basebol com um nível competitivo bastante elevado. Em Portugal estão já criadas boas bases para se desenvolver”, esclareceu Hugo Almeida.
Como forma de encorajar os praticantes a manterem-se activos na modalidade e a evoluírem as suas capacidades, a Internet e os canais televisivos norte-americanos têm ajudado na promoção deste desporto, existindo também alguns torneios e ligas disputados com a equipas portuguesa e da região espanhola da Galiza, que ajudam os Vikings a melhorar as suas performances.
O próximo sonho do clube é melhorar as características da Arena, “conquistada” ao mato que crescia no terreno cedido pela autarquia, dotando o espaço com um terreno relvado, em vez da actual gravilha, e de instalações de apoio.
